ELEKTRON MODEL:SAMPLES | DRUM & BASS JAM
Hey friends,
It's been a while since I spent some time with this groovebox so I thought I would see what I could come up with. This is the result of that effort. A two pattern-using, DnB track with a lot of atmospheric and melodic content.
Hope you digs.

MODEL CYCLES | THIS ONE DOESN'T SUCK | IDM(ish) TRAP BEATS
Просмотров 241Месяц назад
I couldn't leave things where I did with the Elektron Model Cycles so I had to give it another go this week and try to make something a bit more compelling. In my last video I make a track that I hated and almost just threw away but decided to be objective about it and do a video analysis of why I thought it was bad. Here's a link to that one: ruclips.net/video/AVRMLkH-EfM/видео.htmlsi=zBr9A5zM...
WHY IS THIS TRACK BAD? | Analysis of A Weak Track Made on the Elektron Model Cycles
Просмотров 948Месяц назад
Drum & Bass Made on an Elektron Model Cycles So I recorded this the other day and when I played it back, I thought it sucked. I wasn't going to post it but I figured why not take an objective look at the track and figure out what it is that makes it weak. As I've gotten older and more experienced with making music, I've become better at identifying the weaker ideas and scrapping them before goi...
EP-133 KO II | TRIBAL... TRAP... THING? | ROLAND SP-404sx & PO-32 TONIC INCLUDED

A jam on the EP-133 KO II run through my Roland SP-404sx with a bit of PO-32 Tonic for added percussion. I don't know what you would call this style of music. I guess it's kind of trap(ish?) but who cares. It's not a style I work in very often but I like how it's kind of got a two-step thing going on with the main tempo being around 140 bpm but everything flowing slower at half-time to that. Yo...
HOMEGROWN HOUSE MUSIC | VOLCA SAMPLE, TB-3, DIGITONE
Просмотров 2672 месяца назад
I made some groovy house music on my Korg Volca Sample, Roland AIRA TB-3 and my Elektron Digitone. I haven't made anything with my Volca Sample in ages so I felt like it was time to blow the dust off of it and lay down some grooves. I really wanted to see how complete of a track I could make with 1 pattern on this device and I was initially going to only use the Volca but after I got it tracked...
DRUM & BASS | GLITCHY ROBOT EDITION | PO-33 KO

Some new Drum & Bass made on the always fun, never done PO-33 K.O! Despite having many samplers including Akai MPCs, Roland SP's and even the bigger brother to this one (the EP-133 KO II) I still am continually drawn to the challenge of trying to squeeze as much juice out of this little instrument as I can. 40 seconds of total sample time, 4 voice polyphony and only 16 pattern slots certainly k...

Single pattern based lofi jam on the EP-133 KO II. Something for that chilled out, weekend kind of vibe. Spring is sproingin' in Nashville, Tennessee so I guess I was feeling that kind of way when I made this. I hope you folks have a good weekend. #TripHop #lofihiphop #ep133
THIS NEEDS LYRICS | A PO-33 TRACK (YES, AGAIN)
Просмотров 1823 месяца назад
Music made on the PO-133 KO. I've been on the fence about posting this one. I think it's an interesting piece of music and has a certain vibe and style that is atypical for me but the tone of these samples introduced a lot of noise artifacts and it generally feels like something is missing. That something (in my mind) is lyrics/vocals. So, if anyone out there is inspired and wants to sing some ...
Hardware vs. DAW Mixing Part 2 - Let's Compare The Same Track Mixed Two Ways - Liquid DnB
Просмотров 1873 месяца назад
In this video I compare the same track as produced only on hardware vs. being stemmed and mixed in my DAW. In part one I presented a track that was made entirely on my Novation Circuit Rhythm. Here in part two we'll A/B sections of that same track between both the Circuit mix and the DAW mix and then I'll present the complete DAW version at the end. I tried very hard to present both as equally ...
Hardware vs. DAW Mixing Part 1 | Producing the Same Track Two Ways (Using Atmospheric Drum and Bass)

So I've been working on this atmospheric Drum & Bass track and I've been making it on the Novation Circuit Rhythm. I was planning to stem everything out of the Novation and into my DAW so I could give it a proper mix down. Then I thought, why not document the process so we can compare the final results? In this Part 1 video, I simply introduce the idea and then demonstrate the results I get by ...
EP-133 KO II - Some Workflow Tips to Help You Get Full Tracks Out of It

A couple of workflow modifications I've come up with to help get complete tracks out of the EP-133. As I mentioned in my 2 Month Review video, I had a couple of things I've started doing to help me better enjoy this little sampler. Hoping that TE finds a way to implement some changes that will improve the workflow but in the meantime, this might help you. If you want to see the review I did, th...
The EP-133 KO II - After Using it for Two Months, Here Are My Thoughts

My thoughts on the EP-133 KO II after using it for two months. Just some baseline pros, cons and how it deviates from the original PO-33 KO. I got this for christmas and initially I wasn't sure I liked it all that much. I was really struggling to get a full project out of it but after I turned that corner (and only after), I decided it would be fair to give it a review. So, in case you want to ...

A Jungle track I made on the PO-33 K.O! I like the new EP-133 KO II fine but there's still something special about this little pocket sampler. The workflow is just so smooth. Even with fancier tools at my disposal, I still had to give this little guy some love. The arpeggiated synth riff was sampled from my JU-06A synthesizer but everything else was sampled from SampleFocus.com By the way, if y...

Did you do a turislnusing it a a live sampler or looper for live looping?
I was waiting for the beat to drop. I’m a little disappointed lol I was hoping just at the end. But no
I like your stuff
It’s def got heart in it. Can’t learn that
Thanks a lot, George. That is very encouraging.
wtf wow
I like this a lot! For the "chords," is that a piano sample? Where did you source it, please, if you don't mind sharing. Would enjoy hearing more of your M:S work. Maybe some tutorials to help newbies like me, that would be great, too! Thanks.
Thanks so much for the kind words. The piano chords (and most of the samples actually) came from an older DnB sample pack called "Skyline." It has a focus on melodic, atmospheric and liquid Drum and Bass sounds. If you'd like to hear more M:S work, I have a lot of videos using it including a full DnB set as well as a full downtempo set made with this device. Both are here on my channel in my elektron playlist. Let me know if you have questions about using it and I'll definitely be happy to answer those too.
❤
This aent hard ,though i moght only have just the k.i 2 in my possession
I had a QY-10 once, but it was impossible to operate, so I sold it very quickly. I just watch this video to know what is possible with it.
How is recording at 16bit ?
Ooops, he did it again.. Cool sound editing+ careful arrangement+ Matt Factor X= Dope Beat! Kudos! and Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much.
Kewl jam
MGM at his finest! This is top shizz!!! ❤
GREAT JAM Matt
Thanks a lot! 😊
Sounds great! How do you feel about the Rhythm holding lots of Jungle breaks? Is there enough room? I felt quite let down by the PO KO 33 and really like the Circuit Tracks
It'll be fine for holding a bunch of breaks. There's a limit to how long a sample can be (32 seconds maybe? I forget) and a limit to how many slots you can have in a project but you can have a whole bunch of projects and it's more than adequate to have a ton of different tracks worth of audio data on this thing. Not even comparable to the KO in terms of storage capacity. The KO is like 1 track at a time. You can have numerous albums worth of songs on this device and if you run out, just put in a new SD card and keep going.
@@MattGreerMusic Thank you, I really appreciate this feedback. Love how the Tracks is so intuitive, so the Rhythm seems like a no brainer. Just weighing up my needs for the next aquisition… (more midi channels, more effects, more sample space) 😊✌️ cheers mate
I think the Rhythm is the best sampler in this price tier.
first of all, that D+B sound is amazing, did you use all built in samples/sounds? secondly, this video convinced me I need one of these. one thing I was wondering, can you set up individual scenes to be in different keys, and even modes? for instance, modulate from A Dorian to D Mixolydian, within the same project. thanks!
Hey there. Thanks a lot. I did not use any built in samples for this track. I tend to do best when I seek my samples specifically for the project and with a sound in mind. Anyways, I am not 100% sure about being able to use different scales on different scenes but I believe you can. The reason I say that is I'm always sampling melodic sounds for their timbre but they can often be out of key with the track so I'm always trying different keys and scales to make that new sample work with the composition and I do that all the time so I *believe* that the scale is set as a parameter to the sample and could thus be different between different scenes and sounds. I know that when I choose a new scale, it doesn't change the note content of the other sounds so they seem to be independently programmable. Thanks again for watching.
The best I’ve heard on the ko2 man From where those amazing samples?
Hi, what cable do you use? I see many ppl asked that already! Could you illuminate us pls 🙏
Any USB cable with the appropriate connections will work. So it can be a USB lightning cable to USB B or you can incorporate adapters to modify the connections.
Thank you so much
.. amazing and intuitive sampler machine !!! 👍🙏✌️ eazy and strong .. just awsome !!! .. when amplifying !!!
Grimey gutta gutta
Is it possible to add effects to a live voice via line in?
Yes it is but you only get one effect per project so it will have to be the same effect you are using on the beat.
Still sounds so fresh to this day. Inspiring me to do more jungle and drum & bass stuff on the PO-33.
I really appreciate that. Can't believe I posted this almost 4 years ago.
@@MattGreerMusic I really appreciate you still being active! Not enough people have videos out there on DnB/jungle stuff on the pocket operators, this is truly a gem!
Whoa...the jam is so freaking good! Has kind of an AFX vibe...nice one👏
BANGER :D
It’s an odd one...I have a fair few Elektron boxes and after using them for years my ear can now pick up when someone uses them, especially the smaller ones...but how can that be? We’re loading our own sounds and doing our own ears mixes etc, so how does a track have a certain machines’ sound?! Perhaps it’s converters or components, tis a headscratcher. Oh...great fun track btw :)
I hear ya. This is one of 8 Elektron instruments I own. I may not immediately pick up on a sample based one like the Digitakt or model samples but something like the monomachine, Digitone or this, I can spot immediately. Thanks for listening.
Very nice Matt👍 I also just listened to your brilliant techno track (ruclips.net/video/N7LV78wljKw/видео.htmlsi=srp2FrQdt0IltX-b ) and left a comment, please make some techno making tutorials for Model Cycles. Thank you 🙏
Matt, please please please make a tutorial on how you made this wonderful work. We, the model cycles users would really appreciate it 👍
Real nice one!
Thanks!
For what it might be worth, that bass would be way better as long legato lines instead of stacatto jumping around, since the other elements are jumping around. It would balance them out. The sound is great though, I love that FM gnarly bass sound.
That's an excellent observation. Good idea.
Yup...80 to 90% of the tracks I make suck🙈
Over the years I've gotten better at identifying the "lost causes" earlier in the process and scrapping them but occasionally one still makes it to the end.
Definitely one of those tracks that can be revisited down the road. I keep a "not working" folder -- sometimes I dip in and think "I don't know what I was thinking, I dig it now!" and sometimes I hear it fresh and realize precisely what it needs. And other times I'm like, "yep, still not working!" LOL
this is what happens when you care more about being a mindless consumer and chasing gears and hardware over actually making or thinking about music with the tools you already have
A bit heavy handed here. I am not a mindless consumer and I have been able to make some really nice tracks with this device as I've had it for years and have used it many many times. I make a ton of music and not everything I record gets put out there but we can still learn from those experiences. That's the point of this video.
What an odd thing to say, @assasinofpapers
Have you tried doing all (A, B, C, D) patterns for you song in scene 01, then 1. select the 4 ABCD patterns for the intro 2. commit to the next scene 3. go back to scene 1 4. repeat steps 1-3 for chorus, verse, etc.
I wonder if they will do any more updates. There is always a price vs features balance. It looks like they got that right. It's a real nice looker of a device
the bass elements need to be waaaaayyy bigger....fx....stereo
40 secs in a im laughing my ballss off
yes, it's uninspired trash with no feel to it
Soulless for sure.
Nice demo. Sounds awesome! It’s crazy to think that Martin Gore was invited into Depeche Mode because he owned this synth.
шикарно!
awesome. I'm not even into d&b but this is really good chit and very well produced!
This device doesn’t make sense. Buy Akai MPC Used. It is a toy for children
No, it's not and I own three MPCs. Each have their strengths and weaknesses.
hey nice video! can you record on the fly and then play the recorded part as another loop plays without stopping the sound? like a multitrack synced looper
It can.
Should I get it if I have a higher end MPC model? I want it primarily for fidgeting in bed or having meditative fun on the riverbank. But it’s also over $400 in my country which is also on the lower income end.
Great work on this set-up, congratulations 👏.. Tirzahs ‘colourgrade’ and ‘Trip 9 love’ could be worth a listen if you might enjoy neo trip-hop as adding some fractured rhythmic ideas for the track later on. Million other choices too but just sending a thought as it came to me listening to your track. Wishing you best of luck with its interesting development. Best wishes 🙏
I have an sp 808 ... gonna learn how to use it and hook up to a DAW if possible
This thing would be awesome if it actually worked. It doesn’t play samples all the way through. Can’t finish a single song because of it. Idk wtf it’s doing, it’s updated, has enough memory. I just cant get more than a few minutes of making a song until something goes wrong.
Mine likes to spontaneously dump all the note data out of one or more of the tracks while muting/playing with the live effects. And because it "saves as it goes" there seems to be no way to recover it once it's gone. It's infuriating.
@@MattGreerMusic So annoying dude. If this thing actually worked it would be fun. I want to break it in half. In the last hour I’ve deleted 3 projects because every fucking time whatever sample I use gets cut off after 1-2 seconds. Latest firmware and I only have about 20mb on it. Unusable.
@@MyNameJeff.. Even with no other sample or sound playing it still cuts off the sample?
@@MattGreerMusic So, here’s whats happening- Group A I’ll have my kick, snare, hihat, I’ll lay a basic beat… Then group B I will sample from splice or Spotify, a 10 second sample give or take, enough for 4 bars. Then if I try to add an open hihat in group b, the sample from group B will only play for 1 bar… And I listened to see if the open hihat was possibly choking the sample from group B, but it’s not. This happens on anything I’m trying to make, even after a factory reset. Maddening.
That sounds more like a voice stealing issue. Are the one shots for your drums set to "choke/mute" each other in the same mute groups? This thing doesn't have much polyphony.
Do a tutorial pleaseee
That's an interesting idea. Sadly I deleted these samples off of the PO a long time ago but I could do a new tutorial based on Trip Hop as the intended genre.
@@MattGreerMusic that would be soooo cool, I recently bought one for myself, and I really want to figure it out
@@velartt Congrats. It's a great device. Punches way above its weight.
Genius !!!
Great machine. I find it really excels as a live noisemaker and less so with arranging tracks. One reason being you can’t edit the onboard sequencer while recording. Editing the sequencer on the fly, changing which parameters it controls can get you deep into some experimental sound design territory.
My biggest gripe with the sequencer is that it doesn't loop but it's awesome for a sound/fx processor.
@@MattGreerMusic Sorry, I was referring to the step modulator. it has different modes including measure, song play, step or loop. I like the measure one alot cuz it'll trigger at each bar which can create some cool effects with off-time stuff.
its a bop!
